Feeler gauges, used to take precise measurements

Through a series of innovative public workshops, Northwest Seaport is restoring the 1934 diesel engine that powers the Arthur Foss (a National Historic Landmark vessel). The Diesel Engine Theory Workshop program began in 2004 with a condition survey and long-range restoration plan for the engine. This year’s session (funded in part by 4Culture’s Heritage Special Projects program) focused on inspecting, servicing, and repairing the engine’s #4 cylinder. Participants worked beside professional diesel mechanics to take apart the cylinder – including the eighteen-inch-wide piston – while learning about diesel technology and application.
