4Culture, Artist Trust and the Estate of Su Job Present: Conductive Garboil Grant

Come and celebrate with Sherri Brown and friends as she is honored with the Conductive Garboil Grant. The Conductive Garboil Grant was developed by artist Su Job just before her passing in December 2008 and acknowledges Seattle artists with a connection to Pioneer Square who have “demonstrated a profound ability to challenge the limits of conductive creative discourse and its effects on our society, pushing the creative act beyond the accepted limits, definitions, or purposes of art while engaging audiences outside the aesthetic industrial complex.”

A-Y-P concert: Greg Williamson Large Ensemble

Thursday, October 29, 2009, noon – 1 pm at city hall

Come checkout this 15-member group as they re-imagine the music of Seattle’s first world’s fair which attracted 3.7 million people. The ensemble re-interprets popular music from 1909 and music commissioned for the A-Y-P using period instruments and large-screen projections of photos from the fair. Presented in partnership with Earshot Jazz Festival. Greg Williamson is a 4Culture Site-Specific alum!

Bunka No Hi

The Nikkei Heritage Association of Washington is hosting the 4th Annual Bunka no Hi – Japanese Culture Day. Located at the Japanese Cultural and Community Center in the International District, this celebration will feature professional Ringtara & Asako Tateishi performers, children’s games and activities, and Nintendo Wii competition. There will also be community booths, food, and the fifth installment of Omoide (memories in Japanese). A 2008 4Culture Heritage Special Project, Omoide V tells new stories of the Japanese American experience in the Pacific Northwest. All festivities are open to the public and free, so bring your friends and family!

China National Acrobatic Troupe “dare”

The China National Acrobatic Troupe having integrating music, dance, drama and martial arts with traditional programs has forged a distinct modern acrobatic art form. These visual stunning performances will be coming to Meany Hall for the Performing Arts. This engagement is presented by the American Asian Performing Arts Theatre with support from 4Culture’s Groups Arts Projects funding program.

Kasumai Africa – Masters of African Music & Dance

Musicians, singers, and dancers will perform a mixture of traditional rhythms and contemporary influences. Thione Diop, a 2009 4Culture Individual Artist Projects recipient directs this celebration of West African culture.

This event brings together an exciting array of talented performers from Senegal, Ghana, Mali, Guinea, Benin, South Africa, and Cameroon. You’ll enjoy the unique sounds of the kora, balafon, and djembe, djun djun and tama drums.
