With 2009 and the Alaska Yukon Pacific Exposition Centennial a recent memory, it’s not too early to begin planning for the next world’s fair anniversary, the semi-centennial of Century 21. April 21, 2012, will mark 50 years since the opening of the 1962 fair that brought us futuristic visions of the 21st Century.
As 4Culture did in planning for the A-Y-P commemoration, we are encouraging applicants to the Heritage Special Projects and Heritage Cultural Education programs to consider proposing projects that explore the historical impact of the 1962 fair on this region. 4Culture’s support of A-Y-P projects generated exhibits, events, media productions, publications and activities that added substantially to the success of the centennial commemoration.
By beginning now on Century 21 planning, we hope to support additional proposals for the upcoming celebration by offering applicants two annual funding rounds and sufficient lead time to develop projects prior to 2012. However, Century 21 project proposals are not a requirement of the funding programs, and we will continue to welcome all creative proposals that examine and promote King County history. Remember that online applications are due March 3, 2010.
(Please note that guidelines for this all of this year’s programs are currently being updated, and will be posted for most programs by mid-January.)

Century 21?! Already?
Oh yeah, that’s now. I miss when the Space Needle was orange. I think about Future/Past and color as Scriabin’s birthday was yesterday — a seeming non-sequitor, but this has to do with projections, prognostications, and synesthesia, right?
Looking forward to 2012.
