Local documentary photographer, Andrew Hida, examines Seattle’s Chinatown community through the multimedia documentary project, 16 Square Blocks. From the compelling story of survival of Filipino World War II veteran Virgilio Besabe, to the humble congregation of the Iglesia de Dios (Israelita), Hida features the unexpected stories of unsung heroes, little known communities, and unique sub-cultures essential to the fabric of Seattle’s Chinatown. Through a series of captivating documentary shorts, and 100 black and white portraits, 16 Square Blocks aims to reshape how we interpret and identify with this neighborhood by creating a contemporary portrait of the community.
