<p>The Center for Documentary Studies (CDS) at Duke University and The Honickman Foundation (THF), co-sponsor this prestigious biennial prize for American photographers. The only prize of its kind, the CDS / Honickman First Book Prize competition is open to American photographers of any age who have never published a book-length work and who use their cameras for creative exploration, whether it be of places, people, or communities; of the natural or social world; of beauty at large or the lack of it; of objective or subjective realities.</p>
<p><a title="Virginia Center for the Creative Arts" href="http://www.vcca.com/main/index.php">Residency: Virginia Center for the Creative Arts</a><br />
 Deadline: September 15, 2010</p>
<p>Situated among 400 acres of rolling Blue Ridge farmland, the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts in Amherst, VA, offers two-week to two-month residencies for writers, composers, and visual artists from around the world. Residents receive meals and private studios and bedrooms. The Center asks residents to contribute to the cost of their residency if able, but financial ability does not figure into the selection process.</p>

 Deadline: September 17, 2010</p>
<p>For Winter 2010 and Spring 2011 Arteles is calling open-minded creative participants from all disciplines such as music/sound, fine art, photography, contemporary research, film/video, multidisciplinary arts, installation, painting, new media etc. Also other fields of creativity are now open such as graphic design and fashion. The selection of artists is done by the Arteles administration along with selected network members or invited creative professionals.</p>
<p><a title="Hedgebrook" href="http://www.hedgebrook.org">Writers Residency: Whidbey Island</a><br />
 Deadline: September 23, 2010</p>
<p>The Hedgebrook Writers in Residence Program on Whidbey Island, WA, is accepting applications for its 2011 residency season (February &#8211; November). Residencies range from two to six weeks and are open to women writers from around the world. Residents live in handcrafted cottages on the property’s 48 acres of forest and meadow with access to nearby Double Bluff beach, and enjoy a nightly communal dinner prepared with locally and organically grown food.</p>

<p>Any writer who has not previously published a volume of prose fiction is eligible to enter the competition. Previously entered manuscripts that have been revised may be resubmitted. Writers are still eligible if they have published a volume of poetry or any work in a language other than English or if they have self-published a work in a small print run. Writers are still eligible if they are living abroad or are non-US citizens writing in English. Current University of Iowa students are not eligible.</p>

 Deadline: October 1, 2010</p>
<p>The Academy welcomes emerging as well as established scholars, writers, and professionals who wish to engage in independent study in Berlin. Around two dozen Berlin Prizes are conferred annually. Past Berlin Prize recipients have included historians, economists, poets, art historians, journalists, legal scholars, anthropologists, musicologists, public policy experts, and writers, among others. The Academy does not accept project proposals in mathematics and the hard sciences.</p>

<p>The Studio Center provides 4-12 week studio residencies on an historic 30-building campus along the Gihon River in Johnson, Vermont, a village in the heart of the northern Green Mountains.VSC awards a number of Fellowships for 4-week residencies throughout the year. Open to all artists and writers. In addition to VSC Fellowships, a variety of special fellowships are also available for full or partial funding.</p>

<p>Northwest Film Forum announces their latest obstruction for the frisky filmmaker: The Pocket Film Challenge-a small screen, big picture experience.Filmmakers are asked to use mobile phones to shoot and edit three-minute, one-take films. One-take-films are shot without interruption, from the moment of turning the camera on to the moment of turning the camera off. Any text or music must be added using only what is technologically capable with the mobile device. We&#8217;ll put all submitted small screen images in our big screen cinema.</p>

<p>Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz is pleased to announce that the 2010 Thelonious Monk International Jazz Competition will be held on October 3-4 in Washington, DC. Jazz vocals will be featured this year.The Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz, a nonprofit education organization, was founded in 1986 by the Monk family along with the late Maria Fisher, an opera singer and lifelong devotee of music. Its mission is to offer the world&#8217;s most promising young musicians college level training by <strong>America&#8217;s jazz </strong>masters and to present public school-based jazz education programs for young people around the world.</p>

<p>The Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) is the primary source of federal support for the nation’s 123,000 libraries and 17,500 museums. IMLS is seeking grant applicants for its Conservation Assessment Program, designed to provide an affordable and accessible <strong>collections conservation assessment</strong> program to small and medium-sized museums of all types. Our mission is to publish traditional as well as nontraditional forms of nonfiction allied with memoir. <p>Mid Atlantic Arts Foundation and the National Endowment for the Arts have announced the availability of guidelines for the 2010–2011 cycle of USArtists International (USAI), which provides support for American dance, music, and theater artists who have been<strong> invited to participate</strong> in significant international festivals and engagements that represent extraordinary career opportunities anywhere in the world outside of the United States and its territories.  The deadlines for the program are: September 7, 2010 for projects taking place between November 1, 2010–October 31, 2011; December 13, 2010 for projects taking place between March 1, 2011–February 28, 2012; and April 22, 2011 for projects taking place between July 1, 2011–June 30, 2012.</p>

The Clarence John Laughlin Award grants one $5000 prize annually to a photographer whose work exhibits sustained artistic excellence and creative vision.</p>

<p>Hedgebrook <strong>retreat for women writers</strong> is on Whidbey Island, about thirty-five miles northwest of Seattle. Situated on 48-acres of forest and meadow facing Puget Sound, with a view of Mount Rainier, the retreat hosts women writers from all over the world for residencies of two to six weeks, at no cost to the writer. Residents are housed in six handcrafted cottages, where they spend their days in solitude – writing, reading, taking walks in the woods on the property or on nearby Double Bluff beach. In the evenings, they gather in the farmhouse kitchen to share a home-cooked gourmet meal, their work, their process and their stories. The Writers in Residence Program is Hedgebrook’s core program, supporting the no-cost residencies of 30-40 women writers at the retreat each year as well as 5-10 alumnae return stay residencies.</p>

From the beginning, the art-making process has been the highest priority at the Bemis Center for Contemporary Arts, where both the atmosphere and environment offer ideal situations for <strong>creative growth</strong> and experimentation. We address the practical aspects of this mission by providing well-equipped studio spaces, living accommodations and monthly $750 stipends. Located in two urban warehouses totaling 110,000 square feet, our facilities are designed to foster creativity and the productive exchange of ideas. Artists from around the world come to the Bemis Center to work in this supportive community and confront new challenges.</p>

During Couch Fest Films, lovers of film can sit shoulder to shoulder with total strangers watching short films and snacking. On Saturday, November 6th, 2010, each Couch Fest Films house will have its own genre of short movies that play on rotation all day. Starting every hour, each inviting house will have its owunique 30 minute program of short films. Ultimately, the hope is that you might interact, share and discover fellow lovers of film. They are looking for submissions of films and willing hosts. Films should be no longer than 6 minutes and houses should be friendly!</p>

<p>Creative Capital will be offering new Workshop Subsidy Grants through its Professional Development Program, which helps artists to manage the business side of their art with greater efficiency and results. Organizations can apply for grants to<strong> offer these workshops to artists</strong> for a significantly reduced fee. Subsidies ranging from $3,000 to $10,000 are available for a limited number of workshops in planning, internet, and verbal communications, to be held in 2011 and 2012. The deadline for applicants wishing to host a workshop held in 2011, which must be submitted online, is 5:30pm eastern time on June 30, 2010. For applicants interested in hosting a 2012 workshop, the deadline will be announced in the spring of 2011.</p>

The annual festival includes both feature film presentations as well as short film programs and special events with live film performances, installation art, audience participation and parties.</p>

<p>Gallery 40 seeks <strong>visual artists</strong>. Selected artists will be given a one-night show in Pioneer Square during the first Thursday art walk in September. They will also have their work featured on the Gallery 40 website. In lieu of a gallery commission, the selected artist will be required to donate 25% of any sales made during their opening to a Seattle art non-profit of their choice. Upon selection the artist chosen for the September Exhibit will be assisted in submitting applications to help gain funding for their show from local grant programs. The artist does not have to receive funding, but the act of applying furthers the working knowledge of any artist seeking support for their efforts. Applicants must be a Seattle Resident and have not a solo exhibition.</p>

<p>Historic Seattle and 4Culture are requesting proposals from individuals, groups, or businesses who would like to use Washington Hall. Here’s how you can get involved with Washington Hall:</p>
<p>
 •    Hold a one-time event, workshop, or meeting at Washington Hall<br />
 •    Apply for a Short-Term Residency (rent office space, present a workshop series or season of programming, offer a regular class, etc)<br />
 •    Apply to be an Anchor Tenant, joining a collective who will determine space use and management as well as the fundraising</p>

<p>The Conductive Garboil Grant is a yearly, non-restricted award of $3,000 for Seattle Artists who have a <strong>connection to the Pioneer Square neighborhood</strong>. Artist awardees will have demonstrated a profound ability to challenge the limits of conductive creative discourse and its effects on our society, pushing the creative act beyond the accepted limits, definitions, or purposes of art while engaging audiences outside the aesthetic industrial complex.</p>

 Field Artist Residency </a><br />

<p>The Field Artist Residency supports the creative endeavors of artists as they work toward an upcoming production.  This summer is open to <strong>dance artists</strong>. For $325 participants receive: More than 65 hours of rehearsal space at The FAR Space; One individual consultation at The Field. Nine artists will be selected to develop their work with the support of a regular rehearsal schedule.</p>

<p>Collaboration! is the pairing of <strong>choreographer with composer</strong> and their dancers and musicians culminating in a live music and dance performance. Almost every style of dance has been presented over the last decade. After 10 years in the San Francisco Bay Area, Collaboration! is touring; the first performance will be in Seattle at the Fremont Abbey Arts Center October 8 &amp; 9, 2010. Choreographers/dancers &amp; composers/musicians are invited to submit proposals for performances.</p>

<p>3331 Arts Chiyoda is launching a <strong>new residency program</strong> open to artists, curators and creative practitioners internationally. With a full range of facilities including accommodation, studio and gallery, creative practitioners have the exceptional opportunity to extend their artistic engagement in the heart of Tokyo. Not only will artists be able to pursue their own individual research and practice, but they will be connected to the extensive network of Tokyo&#8217;s art scene through the hub that is 3331.</p>

<p>Artist Trust&#8217;s Grants for Artists Projects (GAP) provide support for <strong>artist-generated projects</strong>, which can include the development, completion or presentation of new work. GAP awards are open to artists of all disciplines living in Washington State and offer a maximum of $1,500 for projects. A panel comprised of artists and arts professionals select GAP recipients.</p>

<p>Poets &amp; Writers Readings/Workshops program is now accepting applications for <strong>literary events</strong> taking place in our new fiscal year, which begins July 1. The Readings/Workshops program provides small matching grants ($50-$500) to pay the honoraria of writers who give readings or teach writing workshops in Seattle. Organizations must apply on a writer’s behalf, but writers may initiate the application process.</p>

 Deadline: July 1, 2010</p>
<p>Through the @15 Community Grants Program, Best Buy teams across the United States will select nonprofit organizations that provide positive experiences designed to help teens excel in school, engage in their communities, and develop leadership skills. This year, Best Buy Children&#8217;s Foundation will give a total of $2 million through the program. Best Buy seeks applications from organizations that have current 501(c)(3) tax status and are<strong> serving  young teens</strong>.</p>

<p>The Times Square Alliance seeks letters of interest from arts organizations and artists across disciplines to present contemporary art projects and <strong>art events in the public spaces</strong> in and around Times Square. Artists and arts organizations are encouraged to propose projects that address the unique nature and rich history of Times Square. Projects should be able to have an impact in a space defined by dynamic activity and continuous, competing visual stimuli.</p>

<p>Residency slots from September through January are now available. The Residency Program supports projects which approach media as a contemporary electronic and cinematic art form, <strong>providing artists with time and space</strong> for aesthetic exploration in the creation of new work. The self-directed work environment offers personalized instruction, use of a unique imaging system and access to the media library. Artists use the system themselves, and have unlimited access to the studio during their stay, with time and space for aesthetic exploration in the creation of new works.</p>

<p>The Seattle Office of Arts &amp; Cultural Affairs is accepting  applications for the 2011 CityArtist Projects program that supports  Seattle-based individual <strong>artists working in the performing arts</strong>,  including dance, music and theater. Artists working in  traditional/ethnic and multidisciplinary projects that incorporate one  of these primary performing arts disciplines may also apply. Funding  awards range up to $10,000 to support projects in 2011.</p>

<p>Hey media artists &#8211; don&#8217;t forget that we currently have a call out for media artworks to exhibit on e4c in the 10/11 season. e4c is 4Culture&#8217;s storefront gallery for electronic art &#8211; visible by foot, bike, car or bus to more than 20,000 people each day, e4c exhibits selected artworks from regional and national artists, on rotation, from 7 am &#8211; 10 am, daily.</p>
<p>Up to sixteen media works or media proposals will be selected for presentation through this public gallery for a period of up to one year. Due to the transitory nature of the audience, works between 1-5 minutes are desired. Media artists residing in the U.S., working in all genres are encouraged to apply.</p>
<p>The application deadline is Wednesday, May 26, 2010. Guidelines and applications, which include information about eligibility and review criteria, are available <a href="http://www.4culture.org/e4c/apply.htm">online</a>.</p>
<p>e4c is located adjacent to Gallery4Culture facing Prefontaine Place South in Seattle&#8217;s Pioneer Square neighborhood. e4c consists of four LCD monitors and two speakers mounted to face the exterior of the building that broadcast sights and sounds to passers-by.</p>
<p>Selected artists will work with the e4c program manager to adapt selected work for optimal presentation. The selected artists will also work with the e4c program manager to create promotional materials. Each selected artist will receive a modest honorarium to help defray expenses. The artists retain all rights of the works submitted.</p>

<p>4Culture seeks media artworks for <strong><a title="e4c" href="http://www.4culture.org/e4c/index.htm">e4c</a></strong>, a storefront <strong>gallery for electronic art</strong>. Visible by foot, bike, car or bus to more than 20,000 people each day (seriously, we checked the stats), e4c exhibits selected artworks from regional and national artists, on rotation, from 7 am &#8211; 10 am, daily.</p>
<p>Up to sixteen media works or proposals will be selected for presentation for a period of up to one year. Due to the transitory nature of the audience, pieces between 1-5 minutes are desired. Media artists, residing in the US, working in all genres are encouraged to apply.</p>
<p>T<strong>he deadline to apply is May 26, 2010 (5 p.m. PST) and <a title="e4c Application and Guidelines" href="http://www.4culture.org/e4c/apply.htm">application guidelines</a> are currently available</strong>.</p>
<p><strong> </strong><span id="more-6541"></span>e4c is located adjacent to <a title="Gallery4Culture" href="http://www.4culture.org/publicart/gallery/index.htm">Gallery4Culture</a> facing Prefontaine Place South in Seattle&#8217;s Pioneer Square neighborhood. e4c consists of four, LCD monitors and two speakers mounted to face the exterior of the building, <strong>broadcasting sights and sounds to passers-by</strong>.</p>
<p>Selected artists will work with the e4c program manager to adapt selected work for optimal presentation. e4c utilizes software with a timeline interface, which is distributed through a network to the display monitors and speakers. The selected artists will also work with the e4c program manager to create promotional materials. Each selected artist will receive a modest honorarium to help defray expenses. The <strong>artists retain all rights</strong> of the works submitted.</p>

<p>The P73 Playwriting Fellowship provides year-long comprehensive support to one <strong>early-career playwright</strong> who has received neither wide public recognition nor substantial production opportunities in New York City. Through this program, Page 73 provides artistic and financial resources to one emerging playwright as he or she develops a new play that has not received substantial prior development support.  For his/her fellowship year, the P73 Playwriting Fellow receives a cash stipend in the amount of $5,000 and development support in the amount of $10,000 – 15,000.</p>

The Printing Sponsorship program provides free hourly printing in B&amp;W, RA4 color, or digital to selected artists to complete an already conceptualized project or project-in-process. Each year, Photo Center NW&#8217;s Gallery Advisory Committee will choose 2 artists to participate in the sponsorship. Artists in the program may print at the Photo Center from June to August for 100 hours, without the hourly charge.</p>

<p>Richard Levy Gallery is currently accepting submissions for a group exhibition of art that relates to <strong>maps, cartography, and mapping</strong>. Mapping and cartography have long been utilized to convey information. Recently there has been a growing trend toward using this type of communication to express ideas creatively. While artistic approaches are diverse, the system of mapping within the contemporary art context is of particular interest for a group exhibition planned for July 9- August 20th at Richard Levy Gallery in Albuquerque, NM.</p>

These grants, totaling $14 million in 2010, support the preservation and conservation of nationally significant intellectual and cultural artifacts such as collections, documents, sculpture, and art, and historic structures and sites.</p>

<p>The Ford Foundation has announced a ten-year, $100 million initiative to support a new generation of arts spaces nationwide. The new initiative, <strong>Supporting Diverse Arts Spaces</strong>, will provide funding for projects that incubate and produce creative work across all disciplines. Nonprofit arts organizations with strong track records of artistic excellence, who are intending to buy, build, renovate, partner in the development of, or become anchor tenants in a vibrant artist space can apply for grants of up to $100,000 each over two years in capital and/or planning support.</p>

<p>The goals of the Fox Foundation Resident <strong>Actor Fellowships</strong> are to further an actor&#8217;s artistic and professional development; deepen and enrich his/her relationship with a not-for-profit theater; ensure his/her continued professional commitment to live theater; encourage actors to work outside their comfort zone. Recipients in the Extraordinary Potential category will receive $15,000, with an additional $10,000 available to relieve student loan debt. Recipients in the Distinguished Achievement category will receive $25,000. The host theater will receive $7,500 to be applied to costs incurred in the actor&#8217;s residency activities.</p>

<p>Of particular interest for the 2010-2011 season are dynamic individuals whose presentations explore the stories, ideas and questions of importance to the people of Washington State. Presentations should offer information that encourages dialogue, and gives audience members an opportunity to learn from past events, better understand the present, or inform the future.</p>
<p>Past speakers have included scholars, artists, authors, musicians, and historians. Topics for the 2010-2011 season will be loosely organized in the areas of local/state/national history; the environment; cultures of the region and world (including popular culture); diversity; and healthy communities.</p>
<p>Speakers receive an honorarium of $300/presentation and will be reimbursed for travel costs.</p>

<p><em>Four media artists share information about their work and about their  experience exhibiting on e4c, 4Culture&#8217;s storefront media gallery.  Artists include, Tess Martin, Heather Dew Oaksen, Margot Quan Knight and  Rob Zverina.</em></p>
<p><strong>4Culture seeks electronic artworks for <em>e4c</em></strong>, 4Culture’s storefront media gallery. Visible by foot, bike, car or bus to more than 20,000 people each day, e4c exhibits  selected works on rotation from 7 am &#8211; 10 pm, seven days a week.</p>
<p>Up to sixteen media works or media proposals will be selected for presentation through this public, electronic gallery for a period of up to one year. Due to the transitory nature of the audience, works between1 &#8211; 5 minutes are desired. Media artists working in all genres are encouraged to apply. <strong>The deadline for applications is May 26, 2010. </strong></p>

<p>Women in Film Seattle announces the launch of a new Professional Grant. The new grant will award one woman <strong>filmmaker&#8217;s project</strong> $1,000 in cash, in-kind donations from the Northwest film industry, promotional support through Women In Film (WIF) and a theatrical screening of the finished piece. The grant is open to professional Women in Film members in the Seattle Chapter.</p>

 Chamber Music America’s New Jazz Works program provides support to professional <strong>U.S. ensembles</strong> for the creation and performance of new work in the jazz idiom. The program also funds activities that extend the <br />

<p>Washington State Convention Center &#8211; Call for Exhibitions<br />
 <strong>Deadline: March 26, 2010<br />
 </strong>Proposals are now being accepted for the quarterly rotating art program in calendar years 2011 and 2012 within the Washington State Convention Center (WSCC) public space. “The Galleries” are open daily for all convention delegates, visitors and citizens to enjoy, an estimated 500,000 people annually. “The rotating public art exhibitions have grown into an extremely popular program,” said Karen Wong – Chair, WSCC Art Committee.  Each year Franklin Furnace awards grants to <strong>emerging artists</strong>, allowing them to produce major works in New York. Grants may range between $2,000 and $10,000 depending upon funding received by Franklin Furnace.  Artists from all areas of the world are encouraged to apply; however, funded projects must be presented in New York.</p>
<p><a title="Longhouse Education Center" href="http://www.evergreen.edu/longhouse/home.htm">Longhouse Education and Cultural Center &#8211; Grant Opportunities</a><br />
 <strong>Deadline: April 1, 2010</strong><br />
 The Longhouse Education and Cultural Center at The Evergreen State College has announced a national call to <strong>Native artists</strong> for two grant opportunities: the National Native Master Artist Initiative: Artist Teaching Artists Program (DOC), designed to promote Native arts and cultures within urban and rural Native communities throughout the United States; and the National Native Creative Development Program (DOC), designed to address the professional development needs of individual artists, such as training in marketing, purchase of supplies and materials, professional portfolio development, and apprenticeships.</p>
<p><a title="Inland Crafts" href="http://www.inlandcrafts.org/juryinfo.htm">Inland Crafts &#8211; Calling Craft Artists</a><br />
 <strong>Deadline: April 5, 2010</strong><br />
 Inland Crafts is one of Spokane Washington&#8217;s most treasured juried <strong>craft</strong> exhibitions. This sale and exhibition provides a wonderful array of pottery, glass, basketry, jewelry, fiber arts, wood works, metal design and photography. The event is Nov. 12-13-14 at the Spokane Convention Center.</p>
<p>Evergreen Washelli &#8211; Columbarium Exhibition<br />
 <strong>Deadline: April, 21, 2010</strong><br />
 Evergreen Washelli Funeral Providers in Seattle is accepting submissions for the 2010 Art in the Columbarium exhibition. They are seeking a portfolio of original artwork that illustrates continuity and is appropriate for a columbarium.  Up to six solo shows will be hosted for local <strong>emerging artists</strong>; each solo show will run from four to six weeks. <p><a title="Sitka Center" href="http://www.sitkacenter.org">Sitka Center- Artist-In-Residency Program</a><br />
 <strong>Deadline: April 23, 2010</strong><br />
 Applications for the Residency Program are now available. This program has provided more than 170 <strong>artists, writers, and natural science scholars</strong> the opportunity to conduct their work in the unique environment of Cascade Head and Salmon River estuary near Otis, Oregon just north of Lincoln City on the Oregon coast. Residents are on campus October through mid-May, when public workshops are minimal. Up to five residents at a time, usually from different disciplines and stages in their careers, live and work on campus for up to four-months free of charge.</p>
<p><a title="Wick Poetry Prize" href="http://dept.kent.edu/wick/Competitions/FirstBook.html">Stan and Tom Wick Poetry Prize</a><br />
 <strong>Deadline: May 1, 2010</strong><br />
 $2,000 for a First Book of Poems. This prize is offered annually to a <strong>poet</strong> who has not previously published a full-length collection of poems. The winner receives $2000 and the winning volume will be published by the Kent State University Press in Fall 2010.</p>
<p><a title="Lois Cranston Poetry Prize" href="http://www.proaxis.com/~calyx/Cranstonprize.html">2010 Lois Cranston Memorial Poetry Prize</a><br />
 <strong>Deadline: May 31, 2010</strong><br />
 Selected <strong>poet</strong> will receive $300 cash award and publication in CALYX Journal (Vol. 24:2, Winter 2011). The winner and all finalists will receive a one-volume subscription, and all their poems will be published on CALYX’s website.</p>

 Local Sightings an our annual showcase of current narrative, documentary and experimental <strong>film</strong> by Northwest artists. The week long festival also features panel discussions, historic NW films, a filmmaker lounge, a stellar opening night party, and juried awards for a winning short and feature film.</p>
