4Culture is in and around Harborview Medical Center a lot these days. This summer, we supported Wendy Call as a Writer-in-Residence to work with patients. This fall, artists Carrie Bodle and Ed Essex are exhibiting work on the First Hill campus. Each received an award through our Individual Artists Projects program. Visit these great exhibitions and be sure to take in the amazing public art work from the King County Public Art Collection, managed by 4Culture.

Created while the artist was recuperating from a brain trauma, the personal totems that make up the artwork played a role in her healing process. Of Nuu-chah-nulth, Glitxsan and Kwakwaka’wakw ancestry, Watts’ strong connection to her culture is embodied in her artwork. A resident of Vancouver, she recently served as Project Manager for the Venues Aboriginal Arts Program during the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympics.

At the ceremony on October 9th, artistic groups including the Nuu-chah-nulth Cultural Performers from West Vancouver Island and the Coyote Soldier Boys Drum from Seattle will be dancing and singing to celebrate the awakening of the artwork in its new home. The ceremony is free and open to the general public.

The artist donated Vereinigung to 4Culture’s Public Art collection at Harborview Medical Center and worked with 4culture to site and install the artwork. We are proud to honor Connie Watts and this remarkable work at its dedication and blessing.

Seyed Alavi has been selected to create an integrated artwork for the 500-square-foot stairway landing above the main reception area in Harborview Medical Center. The Landing is at the intersection of the new Trauma Center completed in 1997 and the old hospital building and is a pivotal crossroads for patients and their families as they move between major service areas within the hospital.

Alavi’s artwork will assist in creating better wayfinding within the hospital. The artist brings experience in creating art for a healing environment to the project as well as an elegant design sensibility. Seyed Alavi’s artwork may be seen in our Artist Registry, from which he was chosen by the selection panel.

Bainbridge Island and Seattle, WA-based artists, Maggie Smith and Lois Shelton have been selected to create a commemorative artwork honoring the nursing professionals who have, and continue to study and serve at Harborview Medical Center. The artist team was selected from a pool of 71 artists and artist teams. Smith and Shelton will research and document a legacy of learning and service, and will create an innovative, interpretive artwork to honor it.

1600 registered nurses currently work at Harborview Medical Center. Known as the “engine of the hospital,” their legacy is long and proud. Thousands of nurses have served Harborview and its patients since its founding in 1877 as the King County Hospital, and University of Washington School of Nursing students have received their clinical education at Harborview since 1931.

Maggie Smith is an artist known for her work in metal, stone, ceramic and glass. Her public projects, such as the Armed Forces Memorial in Norfolk, Virginia and the Salem Witch Trials Tercentenary Memorial in Salem, Massachusetts, have explored local history and the meaning of commemoration. Lois Shelton is an award-winning filmmaker with a focus on documentary. With subjects ranging from civil rights and the Japanese American internment to the history of houseboats on Lake Union, Lois seeks to make the past relevant to the present. Both Maggie and Lois are committed to authentic collaboration, deep research, and lyrical storytelling.
